| sliding into retirement.... |
[Jan. 30th, 2006|06:02 pm] |
Fourth year is almost done. As a result, I find myself having a lot of lazy days. Everyone has them sometimes, right. It's natural. They just seem to be a lot more frequent now. It's like, "I've practically got eh degree, why not cruise to the end?" That's obvisouly a pretty uncool attitude, but it's where I'm at right now and I'm pretty happy about it. If only I could just jump from undergraduate studies to retirement. Ah, that would be the life. Jazz. Tomorrow. Gusto. Be there. We who cannot play must never forget to watch. |

| | Smashing Pumpkins- Bullet Train to Osaka | ] | so yeah, I decided to update this thing since I never do anymore. I read everyone else's, I just can't be bothered with mine. It's almost 4pm and I'm still in my pjs and havent' showered. At least I've studied more or less all day. Irish History is on Friday at 9. I think I'll probably pass but reviewing the exam format filled me with some dread. One essay will invovle both readings and lecture. I havent' really done the readings since mid-term. Luckily, I have a friend who didn't attend the lectures after teh midterm (or before) and i leant him my notes. Hopefully he can fill me in on readings. Hopefully.
So I'll be home somteime Friday afternoon. Aunt from England is coming for a few days so I may not be too mobile for a while, but there must be pool and other shenanigans during the break. Hopefully when Jamie's is in the 'bourg we can find some time to play pool with whoever's about providing he isn't too busy. Fonz, no muppets other than the bitter old men could have been acceptable for you. I'm glad it turned out that way.

For no apparent reason this got me to thinking about a speech given by some celebrity alumni on the first day of frosh week (he was in Ed and now I think it's him in those annoying CIBC commercials), he said look back at what you listened to in first year at the end of university. I can't remember why he said it.I'm not too worried. Only first year won't kill enough time, so I'm gonna do all 4. Albums only. This was also sparked by Karen's contentious albums list. What's the soundtrack to your academic dementia? Post in comments here.

| Deconstructing Sesame Street |
[Nov. 8th, 2005|11:11 pm] |
I had the most random experience today and I feel it was worth posting about. I was half an hour late for Hebrew Bible because I got distracted talking to a certain professor (who shall remain nameless) about deconstructionism, Blake and it's relation to Sesame Street. We even watched some Sesame Street on his computer. It was rad in the extreme. I plan on visiting this man in his office more often. I also plan on playing more guitar and becoming even more of a theory geek on the drums. Chance of inflicting sonic vengeance on the Queen's populace with Devon. Excited beyond all expression just to jam with him again. Messing about with crazy guitar playin' Mike on Thursday. Eventually jamming with Szpak. So much music. So many papers. Fucking papers. Now I have to choose between Blake and Sesame Street. As most of you that read this (or both of you as the case may be) know, the Muppets in general and Blake's poetry/art are two fo teh most important things in my life. No,I'm not being ironic. This is like choosing between my children. Perhaps I could work both in to the paper? Yes, that might be a plan. Oh well, off to not fail life (except I will). Oh yeah, I also found out where the term Toadie came from (18th Century term Toad eater, or basically a yes man or woman). I've also found that Nietzche is having a perverse influence on my academic life recently. I thought I hated him. I guess not. He's actually pretty bitter and hilarious. I think anyway. I swear I'm done now. |

| Thanksgiving |
[Oct. 5th, 2005|01:32 pm] |
Thanksgiving is this weekend. Poolhall junkies better be coming home. I can't really play on Saturday but Friday or Sunday works out just fine. Anyone interested? Well, I know everyone's interested (who wouldn't be interested in going to Oddballs?) but can anyone make it? Morto, suck it up and come home. Fonz, when are you making your appearance? Devon, do you want to play both Friday and Sunday? Ah, so many questions. Must eat lunch before inflicting my bizarre and totally haphhazard readings of James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man on my 369 seminar. My goal is to somehow use the phrase "What Joyce was really trying to convey through Stephen's actions at this jucture was the concept of suck my balls". Formalists and New Critics may argue with my invocation of intentionality, but I respond with the above! Hockey starts tonight but homework is important. Should i go to a bar? Should I see if cbc carries it. Prehaps I can listen on the radio. That's the most likely solution. |

or something like that. Nobody pays much attention to it in modern literary criticism anymore, but I'd just like to say that structuralism is the shit. It makes my brain hurt, but probably in a good way. Not much to report. No musical for James this year, but the slightly soul-sucking orchestra looks like it's looming on the horizon. Other than that, I'm desperate to play the drum sin some creative form. A friend of a friend suggested joining his crazy covers collective, but I kind of want something... more......psychotic? Devon, I'm looking in your direction. We don't have much time left to be young and obnoxious before we have to grow up and get a job and such. On a similar note, I'm contemplating having the first hippie club meeting this sunday after Ciara's Start your Year with Art business. This may not jive with scheduling though. Either way, we need to get it started soon or we won't be able to listen to music communally. What a ridiculous statement (insert my riotous and inappropriate laughter here). Oh yeah, Jazz night is now Tuesdays at Gusto's. Smae band as before, nicer locale. I don't think they check ID either as long as you aren't drinking, so if you have underage friends that would normally be deterred by a bar, bring them along. I've had to correct my spelling too many times already in this entry for it to go on any longer. Maybe I'll post again sometime |

| | Opeth- Demon of the Fall | ] | I've worked like a mofo all day only to realize a few things. Even though my prof. liked my proposal for Monday's presentation, the odds of my pulling it off to anyone's satisfaction, never mind his (he is apparently something of a Joyce enthusiast/expert), are hilariously stacked against me. Joyce spoke of living in Dublin as giving people a sort of paralysis and I'm starting to feel that way about my presentation on Dubliners. Funny old world eh? Clarissa is brutal. I can read about 5o pages of joyce in teh time it takes me to read 10 of Clarissa. Bloody Hell. I'm on schedule but it's still a lonf trawl and I wonder if I can keep it up. Speaking of course readings, I just found out that I've been "reading ahead" in the wrong book for 20th Century. So I should probably start Virginia Woolf's "To The Lighthouse" tonight for Wednesday. Also, musical does not look promising as music major the wonder drummer is my competition at the audition. All that bitching aside, the first week of school went really well. All my classes seem to be quite stimulating in one form or another, even if the musical falls through there are several other drumming opportunities that may or may not be open to me that kick ass in varying degrees. Living with Ciara is generally a breeze. Things with Vanessa are pretty solid all round. Good times. MAybe doing things with folks tomorrow night. If you're folks, I'll let you know about tastiness. |

Tomorrow night is pool night . We will be at the Portsmouth Tavern between 9:30 and 10 (I think). I will be there, Ciara will and Morto will. If anyone else would like to come (Devon, I'm especially looking in your direction, giving your status as poolhall junky)you are more than welcome.
ps: Kill Bill has to be the most over-rated film I hav eever seen in my life. Nice soundtrack though |

Except of course for school. That's not till tomorrow. I'll be on campus all day from 8:30-5:30 so feel free to bump into me at random and drag me away from the doldrums of reading Clarissa. I'll be around. Hopefully you will be too. I'm trying to start an informal hippie club. Basically, instead of going out to bars and getting trashed on a Thursday night, we go to one another's houses (different place each week) and listen to music at death defying volumes in the dark (getting trashed optional). Also, Wednesday night Jazz should still be going down (I just need to check with Rich) so those of you that haven't been coming out but want an excuse to, a new school year's resolution might be as good a reason as any. |

The drums hate me at the moment and I'm not so big on the,. I blame the heat. It'll all work out. that's what I keep telling myself. Word on the street is that there's pool tomrrow. I expect you all to be there. Even if you can't be, think about stale cigarette smell and loud classic rock. It'll b elike you're there (I think it's my week for the jukebox, so Zappa and other hialrity will abound). Talk to you later

| | Frank Zappa- Stinkfoot | ] | More bitterness. Pool should have been good times but was kind of a downer. Really good crowd though and many folks I haven't seen in a good long while. Might be heading off to Montreal next weekend. It'll probably cost money to get there and stay somewhere but Pat Metheny for free is mighty sweet (the show in Toronto was like $80 before taxes or anything). And some movie about duets between Dizzie Gillespie and Max Roach. All my academic aspirations for the summer have been crushed and my bitterness is destroying my hopes to build up personal relationships. Sounds ripe for musical hermithood. Or just another boring summer working at the Y and doing nothing. Andrew Morton is making rumblings about pool on Saturday night. It could be good times. I think I'm supposed to do something else but I don't remember what, so I think we should fill Oddballs with hundreds of people. Hobos. Especially hobos. Fuck it all |

No, I haven't achieved any of my goals for the summer and at this late stage I'm not even gonna try. I keep rhyming. That's agitating. Working at the Y again. I'm in with good folks but the job reminds me that I'm a failure. I'm also "landscaping" with Devon. Yeah that's right, Devon has a full time job as well as landscaping part time. we're holding down "2" "jobs" cos we're awesome. I think I'm gonna take up dragon botaing. I think I need to practice guitar more and less on the drums. Whatever happened to the piano. Why do I like playing the bass? Is Dave ever coming back for his bass? Too many questions, not enough lice. I guess it's just teh way of the world.
So recapping: not dead, failure, "researching" my "book", feeling kinda down.
PS: Pick your courses tomorrow. I know I will.

| | Lamb Of God- Omerta | ] | Well, I finished Renaissance without too much difficulty and now I can focus on doing laundry/listening to loud music for the evening. Good times. So I guess there's a new Pope. Hilariously, many of my comrades seem to be displaying the kind of hilarious ignorance and jingoism that we tend to associate with the extreme right. "THE POPE'S A FORMER NAZI! FUCK THE CATHOLIC FASCISTS!!!". Well, not quite, junior. Even the most relaxed and lazy research (i.e. reading any article about the story from an even remotely credible source) will reveal that this Benedict fellow was enrolled in the Hitler Youth against his will at the age of 14 when enrollment was mandatory for all German Youth (the only person that I can think of that got out of it was Joachim Mahlke, but since he's a fictional character he doesn't count). Ditto with the whole joining the army thing (rather, being drafted)and since he never actually finished basic training, the image of him tossing Jews into the oven is somewhat hard to fathom. Don't get me wrong, I'm growing ever-more disillusioned with the Catholic church as an organization every day and I don't know that an ultra-conservative was the best choice for Pope, but so be it. I won't write him off as some Nazi lunatic just because I don't agree with him. In other news, I'll be in the Bourg as of lunch time tomorrow. Antbody else going to be around. I have to study but I can probably squeeze in some socializing. A little death metal in the basement may be called for.

Others not so much. I stil think that the worst I've done is like 4 or 5 hours, so that's not too bad. How many have I done today. Hm......4.5. That must be remedied. Meh, I've got at least half an hour of notes to read somewhere. I'm so sick of school. I enjoyed it until about a week ago. Now I just want to sleep. Or read. Actually I just want to play guitar. Unless it's Jeff Buckley. What kind of bastard writes a sappy love song with 22 DIFFERENT CHORDS!!!!!! that's right. 22!! It's insane. It's occpying almost every waking moment that I'm not studying in. Victorian and Renaissance on Tuesday. I don't knwo that I'm really prepared for either one. I kind of want to write them right now to get it over with...
that's enough of that. On another note, why is nobody coming back to Cobourg in the summer? Seriously, I think Devon and I are the only ones. I imagine AJ will for a little while. But apparently Ciara's staying here and Erin's gonna be in Toronto and Andrew's in Kingston and Glenna's in BC. Who will be there to play pool on Wednesdays. Fonz will probably cos it's looking more and more like he's gonna live at my place in the summer. This can only be good times. Trapsing through the piles of chaos in Brian's Record Option yesterday I found like 4 Ivan Rebroff records. It must be a sign. Cossacks unite! So much trouble. Bah. Back to academia |

| | Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers- Don't Do Me Like That | ] | Everyone else seems to be doing this, so I guess I'll do it too:
Things I learned in 3rd Year:
1.Critical Theory is the shit 2.I may be a Marxist 3. As over-rated as his latter day output was, back in the day, Frank Zappa was a guitar god. 4. I am a jazz fan 5. Jazz, like punk, is one of those undefinable terms that people will debate as long as they live (to quote one man from Port Hope, "Swing is the stuff I like, Jazz is the stuff I don't") 6. All those years that I spent not listening to Black Flag and Minor Threat, I wasn't missing a whole lot. 7. Take on lots of shit that you don't think you can do. You probably can and if you can't, you'll learn something useful for next time. 8.What a hemiola is 9. It's really easy to forget what a hemiola is (2 rhythmic patterns that line up every 3rd beat? Can anybody help?) 10. The more off the wall your essay idea is, the more attention your prof. will pay to it when it's done. 11. I can almost function as a rational human being now. 12. Booze and pills don't mix. 13. Booze without pills is not necessarily a bad thing (especially when you drink a lot of it with Dave and Devon) 14. Going to class a little buzzed isn't the worst idea in the world. It's not the best, but not the worst. 15. I tend to talk out of my ass on these list things |
